I never wanted to be a “saleswoman” in the first place!

I am a networker. I am NOT the 'best' networker. Yet I had an experience this month that heightened my awareness of some things the best networkers do... and the opportunity to take a closer look at what goes on there. Here's what happened... I've recently been exploring the idea of integrating blogging into my business plan. There are a few things I knew I needed to learn in order to maximize my blog and the time it would require. So, having a wonderful network of resourceful people, I got on the phone and started this learning journey.

A friend referred me to a young stay-at-home mom who was trying to teach her Mom the very things I was looking to learn. Sounded like just what I needed too! So I got in touch with this young gal only to discover she had recently started offering a course about optimizing blogging because word seemed to be growing that there was a need for it and people, just like me, were starting to form a line for her advice. (Clever young lady, yes?) So I subscribed to her course... and have been bowled over with amazement! And my amazement compels me to share my excitement about this course. This gal's teaching style and methods are so remarkable that whenever I find myself in conversations about online business building, I'm spilling over my appreciation for her and her course. As a result of these conversations, two of my friends have purchased lifetime subscriptions to Amy's course. Here's the important thing I had absolutely NO intention around selling subscriptions to Amy's course!

It was my huge appreciation for a course that is so perfectly fitting my needs right now, that created an irresistible offer to someone with similar needs.

I didn't realize that's what I was doing... and that's important. There was no agenda, no idea in my head about achieving any 'goal', I was simply present to the moment. But here's what I do know... the reason the conversations came up in the first place was because both of these friends were looking for information similar to what I had found. While I was more than happy to share the paltry bit of knowledge I have... I was really excited to be able to share with them that I would have even more answers for them in a month or two. I then proceeded to share where I was in my learning process and what I was doing about it and they decided they wanted to do that too. I've been experiencing a bit of frustration lately, that my business hasn't been growing as steadily as I would like. So when I looked back and reflected on the past week, I pondered how I 'enrolled' two people into something I wasn't 'selling'... yet no one enrolled in my primary business.

Suddenly I 'got' it. The best networkers don't appear to be selling anything because they're NOT selling.

It seems more likely that the best networkers are simply present to the moment. They are listening for others needs and letting the topic of conversation inspire connections. They are authentically excited to share resources and connect others with people, products, and services that may help solve their problems. And the best networkers have no attachment to others decisions regarding those people, products and services. My granddaughter started High School this year and is just wrapping up the Girl's Swim Team season. They had Sectional competition tonight and she called me with great excitement to share her results. No, she didn't qualify for finals... but she was flying high anyway. You see, she swims four events... and in all four she exceeded her Personal Best (PB) times! That's a swimmers goal... that was her goal... and she did it in spades! As I look at enrolling two people in something I wasn't selling, I realize I, too, exceeded my PB. While I truly admire and greatly appreciate the BEST networkers for all they are modeling to me... I think I'll set my goal at simply exceeding my personal best as measured by the moments I'm fully present with people and engaging in inspired, personal conversation...
