When you understand the critical fundamental of course correcting, take some time today to assess your progress on the goals that you have set and do some “truth-telling”.

Article Article Intro
You may have experienced a goal guru tell you something like “Plans are in sand but Goals are in concrete”…suggesting that once you set a goal – that’s it; you need to dedicate however long it takes and whatever resources are necessary to achieve the goal and never give up. Well the “never give up” part might be good – but I also know after over 25 years helping people achieve in many areas of life – you don’t know very much about what’s going to happen next when you first set a goal! When you set a goal – and particularly if it is a big hairy goal – you can expect to be surprised by something... many things in fact!

When you set a goal, the only perspective you can possibly have is based on the experiences that you have had prior to the new ambition.

And guess what, the new ambition was not part of your history – otherwise it wouldn’t be a goal! Even if you set a goal to reach a previously attained threshold again – in today and tomorrow’s terms there will be many things different that weren’t part of your historical effort. Every new goal moves you into new experiences – guaranteed.

So what is required to achieve any goal is to be willing to course correct based on new information.

Let’s say that you have set a goal for a new level of income. How you intend to go about adding to your income has many options – and what option you pick may or may not be the shortest distance between where you are and where you want to go. With action and experience in implementing one plan, along the way you may find that a small tweak may be necessary, or a whole new plan might even be in order. Either way, the time it takes you to get to you goal may also need to be adjusted, the resources you leverage may need to be enhanced or there may be skills you need to develop. When all is said and done, if you are willing to make course corrections along the way you will stay in the achievement zone and eventually you will not only achieve your goal but likely achieve much more than you originally planned. Now that you understand the critical fundamental of course correcting, take some time today to assess your progress on the goals that you have set and do some “truth-telling”. Do you need to better leverage your experience so far? Has your goal become daunting because you haven’t broken it down to achievable elements based on what you now know? Do you need to re-group and buff up your plan based on new information? And have there been new insights that can actually accelerate your progress that you need to apply? Take action, course correct, repeat. One of the most valuable secrets to goal achievement.
